Check your hearing online or over the telephone
The Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID) have simple hearing checks that you can use to help you determine whether you have a hearing problem or not. They are not full hearing tests as you would get if you visited an audiologist – it’s more of a first step to help you judge whether you need to go and see an audiologist for a full assessment.
The have an online test, which you can try by clicking this link. The number for the telephone test is (UK) 0844 800 3838.
Both tests are speech in noise tests, which basically means that you will listen to people talking in different environments where this is some kind of background noise and you’ll be asked to identify what they said. The test takes about five minutes to complete.
There’s more info on the RNID site.

Unfortunately a telephone ‘test’ is not reliable, 73% of calls will ALWAYS tell you you have hearing loss. If you think you have a loss see an Dr and get it sorted. Also,if you HAVE hearing loss the results are just confusing altogether, and there are real issues with the type of phone you use to call with, some have basic output with many frequency levels unavailable on them. You can’t test your ears on a phone go to an optician who will do it free (Boots does), better still seek GP advice and ENT. The RNID ‘test’ just tells everyone they can’t hear properly.
Hi MM,
Where are you getting your 73% figure from?
73% does sound a bit random but I agree with the concept. Unfortunately this sounds like a sales trap looking to take advantage of people with hearing issues who can often be elderly and more inclined to fall for scams. It it frustrating the amount of misinformation that exists around hearing aids. One thing I am sure we all agree on is that there are millions of people across the world who need and would qualify for hearing aid help who are not getting it becuase they are not diagnosed or do not have the funds to pay for the help. A shame.
