Unilateral hearing loss

Unilateral hearing loss (UHL) is also known as Single Sided Deafness (SSD) – it is where a person has normal hearing in one ear but an impairment in the other.

People suffering UHL will have difficulty hearing and understanding speech in noisy situations and they will find it difficult to localise sound.

CROS Hearing Aids

A contralateral routing of signals (CROS) hearing aid is used to treat single sided deafness – it takes sounds from the ear with poorer hearing and transmits it to the good ear.

  1. Dear Sirs,
I lost my hearing on one side at 2004. It happened suddenly, I was treated immediately in hospital for a week, but no improvement at all. One side is totally deaf. Until now I was told that no hearing aid can help me if I can hear well on one side. It’s very difficult for me to take part in any meeting where more than one or two people are taking part, as you say I can’t locate source of noises.
Can you give me more information on hearing aid for SSD?
Also, do you have any representative in Israel?
Looking forward for your answer, With best regards, Sara.

  2. Hello,

I have two children, ages 17 and 12, both with unilateral complete hearing loss from birth. My daughter, the 12 year old is very successful at school, but my son, the 17 year old has struggled since kindergarten in academics as well as socially. Hearing aids won’t work with my children as both has been diagnosed with nerve causes. Is there anything I can do for my son, in particular, that will help him function in school and in the world?

    Thank you,

    Derry
