Hearing aid prices wanted

I have been thinking of ways that I could expand this blog so that I can offer services and tools that people would find useful. One of the things I would like to do is start a hearing aid price database.

The idea is that someone would be able to either enter a model and see the current price for it or they would be able to enter a price and see what models are available at that price.

It would be impossible for me to keep a record of all hearing aid vendor’s prices for all models so the intention is to have a database of “approximate prices across all vendors”. Something that will give people a ball-park figure - over time the prices will even themselves out and give a reasonably accurate indication of the current price for each model.

I already have some price-lists for a few vendors here in the UK. But this is a call out to you, dear reader: Do you have any price information that you are willing to share? Do you work for a vendor? Have you purchased an aid recently?

I would like to publish prices from all over the world so no matter where you are, please, please send your price info! You can get my email from the contact page - link at the top of this page.

I am not interested in comparing vendor prices - this is not about exposing over-pricing or anything like that. The aim is to create a database that people can use to get (hopefully) up to date hearing aid prices across the industry.

  2. What a great idea, Steve. It would also be interesting to learn about the different features offered by different types of hearing aids and why audiologists choose one model over another.

  3. Hey Sweep,

I do already have Specsavers’ list! They are one vendor who are happy to give out prices.

Even though, as you say, Specsavers probably have the cheapest prices in the UK at the moment, I want to build up a overall average price across all vendors to give people a more realistic view of the price they would have to pay.

  4. If specsavers are so transaprent about their prices then why do they rebrand existing products so nobody can compare?

  5. Luke,

Specsavers do rebrand models for their own product line but they also sell the usual big-brand names and they are up-front about the prices for all of them.

  6. So O.K., I’ll ask the logical question.. “what does specsavers, a UK eyeglass website have to do with Hearing Aids!?”

  7. Hi Shi-Ku,

Firstly, I want to say thanks for all your comments on this site recently - you’ve made some interesting points and to my shame I haven’t replied yet. Thanks.

Specsavers are a glasses supplier but they branched out into hearing said some years ago. Currently, they are the cheapest of the big-name retailers in the UK and are doing a 2-for-the-price-of-1 offer.

Scrivens and Boots are the two other big-name high-street suppliers but they do not match Specsavers for price, in fact, they are not even close. Scrivens are also a glasses supplier that added hearing aids - Boots is a Chemist and they have the David Ormerod hearing aid company instore. From my own personal experience, Specsavers are light-years ahead on customer service too.

  8. >>> If specsavers are so transparent about their prices then why do they rebrand existing products so nobody can compare?

… possibly so that the manufacturers don’t get beaten up by ‘traditional’ dispensers about the huge trade discounts they give Specsavers.

If you are selling ‘different’ products then dispensers can’t compare, and so stay calm!

  9. [...] Hearing aids are available in analog or digital version. Analog hearing aids have been on the market for quite some time and are the least expensive type of hearing aids. Hearing aid prices wanted [...]

  10. This is such an awesome site! Keep it up!

  11. Hej, letar allternativ inköpskanal då jag anser att priserna är allt för höga i sverige. Har hittat i USDA för halva priset men vet ej om man kan köpa där. Kan man köpa av Specsavers i Uk från sverige?

  12. Hi, looking for alternative purchase channels, Prices in sweden is far tio high when compereing to a site I found in the US. I have asked if it´s possible for them to supply to sweden.
I think the manufactores is tryiing to keep prices up, maby something for the european market to look into.

  14. @Allan

I asked America Hears if they supplied to the UK a while back but got no answer. Might be worth dropping them an email.

    Steve

  15. Allan’s second comment through translator:

“Hello, höapparatförsäljningen is uppskörtad presis as spectacles. Can not believe that intermediaries have to put on as much of an hour working time. I have found two suppliers in the U.S. that supplies abroad. An equivalent to the one I looked at half cost + shipping & customs.
However, one should check the warranties and service network if it is a local brand.”

Allan, which companies are prepared to ship abroad? Are you going to purchase from them? If so, please let us know how it went!

    Steve.
