Free NHS hearing aid batteries for all?
I popped into my local GP surgery today and noticed that they had hearing aid batteries at the reception desk.
I asked if I could buy a couple of packets of Size 10 batteries – the receptionist replied, “we don’t sell them, you bring your used hearing aid batteries in and we exchange them for a new packet, free of charge“. Wow! Unfortunately, they didn’t have any size 10s in, but they are going to try and get some in for me.
The receptionist asked me where I got my hearing aids from and it seems that I can get free batteries even though I don’t wear NHS supplied hearing aids.
Does your GP offer free batteries too?

Free hearing aid batteries??!! What?? Wow!! Can you tell me how and where I can find a GP surgery place??
Many thanks! Keep up the good research – this is becoming one of my favorite websites because all the info is helpful!
We had a similar program connected with Starkey Labs. It was well received.
Hearing aid batteries are free in the UK, always have been. Worn hearing aids for 32 years, and never paid for them (apart from emergency situations, where I’ve gone into Boots). I’ve always picked mine up at the hospital or got them from school as a kid.
@Alison
Do you wear NHS aids? I’d always thought that the NHS only supplied free batteries for the aids they fitted? If this is not the case, I will be paying my local hospital a visit first thing next week!
@Brian
Thanks for the kind words. I’ll let you know what I find out from my GP. Going by what Alison has said, I have been overspending for the last 20 years!
